As much as I love most period dramas — and I truly do, I can’t ever recall someone saying to me, “Jenn, let’s watch this movie where the bodices are plentiful, the men are true gentlemen in dapper suits and everyone speaks in a British accent,” and I replied, “Oh, honey, this laundry’s not going to wash itself.” — this adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s “North & South” is my favorite. “I knew I was not good enough for her. Yet I think I love her more then ever.” I watch it and cry softly and juggle my ovaries and silently curse John Thorton for giving me unreal expectations. Then I stand on a tower of tampons and claim my living room in the name of all Vaginakind.

Sam: “I wonder if we’ll ever be put into songs or tales.”
Frodo: “What?”
Sam: “I wonder if people will ever say, ‘Let’s hear about Frodo and the Ring.’ And they’ll say ‘Yes, that’s one of my favorite stories. Frodo was really courageous, wasn’t he, dad.’ ‘Yes, my boy, the most famousest of hobbits. And that’s saying a lot.’”
Frodo: “You left out one of the chief characters. Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam.”
Frodo: “Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam.”
Sam: “Now Mister Frodo, you shouldn’t make fun. I was being serious.”
Frodo: “So was I.”
Sam: “Samwise the Brave.”
